ISHPEMING — The Westwood softball team had to battle through a cold wind, intermittent rain and even a little snow for a period of time Thursday afternoon, but it didn’t seem to faze the Patriots in their doubleheader with Ishpeming.

Westwood got its bats going in the first game to pick up a 16-8 win and then got a strong outing in the circle from Megan Marta, along with some key defensive plays in the nightcap to help notch a 4-2 victory and complete the sweep.

With the game tied 6-6 at the top of the fourth inning, the Patriots plated two runs to take the lead. Westwood then padded its advantage to 12-6 in the fifth on a grand slam by Ellie Miller and in the sixth, Mollie Stille cranked an inside the park homer and Natalie Prophet hit a three-run dinger off the fence to help push the lead to 10.

The Hematites tried to rally, getting one run back in the sixth on a RBI by Olivia Corp, and another one off an error in the seventh, but that’s all they could manage.

Allie Radcliffe picked up the win in the circle for the Patriots after whiffing 12 batters and giving up three walks, while Hailey Hyttinen took the loss for Ishpeming. She gave up four walks and struck out three.

In the second game, Westwood scored two in the first and then another two in the third to go up 4-0.

The Hematites answered back with a run in the fourth and one in the fifth, but it couldn’t cut the deficit any further.

Marta surrendered two hits and six walks, but struck out five to notch the victory, while the Hematites’ Payton Manninen was dealt the loss. She gave up seven hits and three walks, while striking out five.
