ISHPEMING — Alyssa Hill set a Negaunee school record while Ishpeming’s Lola Korpi was a three-time individual-event winner at the WIN Meet in high school track and field held at Ishpeming High School on Tuesday afternoon.

In the boys meet, four athletes each were two-time individual-event winners.

But team-wise, Negaunee ran off with both titles, leaving the Hematites and Westwood Patriots fighting for second place.

The Miners scored 91 points in the girls meet, while Westwood scored 44 to edge out Ishpeming’s 43 in the traditional three-school west end invitational.

For the boys, Negaunee accumulated 86 points as the Hematites put up 47 and Patriots 35.

Members of winning relay teams weren’t available.

All three of these schools are scheduled to be at the nine-team Lions Invitational to be held at the Negaunee track at 3 p.m. Friday, though Westwood has also been listed as going to the Munising Invitational that same day. The Lions meet is also scheduled to include Marquette, Gwinn and L’Anse.

Korpi, Hill star for girls

Hill set a Negaunee record in the discus by flinging the flying disc 122 feet, 7 inches, breaking a record dating back more than three decades. The previous record holder was Kathy Hill’s 121-11 1/4 from 1985, according to NHS head coach Vickie Paupore.

Hill also won the shot put with a heave of 35-6.

Korpi, meanwhile, dominated at distances for Ishpeming, capturing the 800-meter run in 2:35, 1,600 in 5:46 and 3,200 in 12:51.

Just to make it fair, the other multi-individual event winner was from Westwood. Allyssea Smith swept the hurdles, winning the 100 in 17.54 seconds and 300 in 54.26.

“I was very proud of my team; they set a lot of personal records,” Paupore said. “Jillian Skewis was our senior leader and she had three wins in the sprint (400 and 800) relays along with the 100 (dash).

“Seere Helms-Gleason had two firsts and two seconds.”

Also in the relays, Westwood carried off the 1,600 and Ishpeming the 3,200.

Among the other winners were Negaunee’s Helms-Gleason in the long jump and Tessa Standerford in the pole vault, Ishpeming’s Addison Norton in the high jump and Westwood’s Elizabeth Williams in the 400 and Lindsay Williams in the 200.

Each school doubles up

The four double winners in the boys meet represented all three schools.

Negaunee’s Isiah Wood won the discus with a toss of 100-4 and shot put with a heave of 38-5, while teammate Lukas Nelson took the 100 in 11.60 seconds and long jump by leaping 18-10.

Ishpeming’s David Liimatta won the 800 in 2:06 and 1,600 in 4:54.

And for Westwood, Jack Boase swept the hurdles, winning the 110 in 16.20 and 300 in 43.77.

The Hematites won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, the Patriots captured the 400 and Miners the 800.

Individually, other winners were Negaunee’s Kainoa Lacar in the 200, Joe Rosten in the pole vault and Phillip Nelson in the high jump.

Ishpeming also had Preston Gauthier win the 400 and Silas Broberg the 3,200.
