Marquette boys golfers win, girls 2nd at home meet

MARQUETTE — Marquette Senior High School boys won and the girls were runners-up at a Great Northern Conference golf meet held at the Marquette Golf Club on Monday.

Playing on the Heritage course, the Redmen totaled 167 as each golfer played nine holes.

Marquette’s low score was actually from its sixth golfer, Brock Taylor, who score didn’t count in the final standings with his 37.

Counting for the Redmen were Owen Riipi with 39, Lincoln Sager and Joseph Luke each with 42 and Jace Moore with 44. John Weber added 45 as the “just in case” score.

“There were tough conditions they battled through,” MSHS head coach Ben Smith said. “Our depth is going to be our strength this spring.”

He added that the Marquette boys are now tied at the top of the conference standings.

In the girls meet, the Redettes finished second with a trio of their golfers finishing in the top five — Morgan Rhoades shot 49 while Abby Luke and Zoe Smith each had 56.

The team was rounded out by Abby Hellman with 77 and Hannah Ruuska with 84 as MSHS is now second in the conference standings.

Starting at $3.23/week.
