Errors cost Marquette Senior High School baseball team a chance for sweep at Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE — A multitude of errors helped cost Marquette a chance at a high school baseball doubleheader sweep at Sault Ste. Marie on Friday.

Instead, the Redmen settled for a split, winning 6-3 in the opener before falling 10-7 in the nightcap.

Marquette gets back on the diamond at home this afternoon with a game against Kingsford, then goes up to Houghton on Tuesday afternoon. The Redmen also have a home game scheduled against Gladstone on Thursday and the Soo on Friday.

Marquette 6, Soo 3

In the first game, Justin Wenk went all six innings on the mound for Marquette, scattering five hits and only allowing three unearned runs. He struck out six while walking three.

Teammate Ashton Demoski was 3 for 3 while scoring a run and stealing a base. Peter VandenAvond and Brady Wright added two singles apiece for the Redmen, VandenAvond scoring twice and stealing three bases, while Wright had an RBI, run scored and steal.

Wenk and teammates Erik Johnson, Jacob Knauss and Sam Barlett each had a hit as MSHS totaled 11 hits off a pair of Soo pitchers. Jonah DeNuccio started and went five innings to take the loss.

Bennette Swanson led Blue Devils hitters with a triple among two hits and an RBI.

Marquette jumped out quickly, scoring three times in the top of the first inning, though the Soo made it 3-2 in the third. Each team scored once in the fifth before Marquette added two more insurance runs in the sixth.

Soo 10, Marquette 7

While three errors didn’t hurt the Redmen in the opener, a whopping eight miscues in Game 2 seemed to doom them while trying to finish the sweep.

Losing hurler VandenAvond pitched the first 4 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs — but only three earned — on seven hits and five walks as he fanned two.

Johnson got the final out in the fifth with zeroes across his pitching line.

The Soo also had just five RBIs among their 10 runs. Marquette took a 4-3 lead in the top of the third before the home team answered in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-4.

MSHS pulled within 7-6 in the top of the fifth before the Blue Devils again answered in the bottom of the inning to re-establish a 10-6 advantage.

Wright led Redmen hitters, going 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs, a run scored, a hit-by-pitch and stolen base. Demoski and Wenk each had two hits, Demoski getting a double and stolen base while Wenk had an RBI and scored once.

Johnson tripled, scored and stole a base, while Nate Cromell and Alex Applekamp each scored twice without benefit of a hit. Cromell walked, was hit by a pitch and stole two bases, while Applekamp walked twice and had a steal.

Jack Bachard had two hits, an RBI and a run to lead Soo hitters.
