Negaunee Miners boys open high school tennis season with emphatic win over Ishpeming

NEGAUNEE — It’s might’ve been considered a victory just getting on the courts Tuesday after a nearly two-year absence, but the Negaunee High School boys tennis team also added a “W” in the win-loss column at its home courts.

The Miners blanked Ishpeming 8-0 as NHS didn’t lose a game in the five contested matches.

Among the winners was No. 1 singles player Will Luke, just about the only Negaunee player with prior varsity experience. He won 6-0, 6-0 over the Hematites’ Landon Kiviniemi.

“With two years since a match, early this year we want to quickly adapt to what a match looks like, how to handle it, and become comfortable within the lineup,” Negaunee head coach Kyle Saari said. “Everyone that played handled that part of it well, and they were able to pick up their first varsity win, except for Will, who has been in the lineup prior. We’re looking for Will to set the tone for us at the top, and he’s a good leader to do so.”

Other Negaunee winners were Luke Syrjala at No. 2 singles, Corbin Marshall at No. 3 singles, Mick Kumpula at No. 4 singles and Nick Jacobetti and Gavin Saunders at No. 1 doubles.

Ishpeming is scheduled to get back on the courts today at Iron Mountain, while Negaunee plays again Thursday at Escanaba.
