Miners netters drop Escanaba, Menominee on road
ESCANABA — Negaunee had a productive day on the tennis courts in Escanaba on Thursday as the Miners defeated a pair of Great Northern Conference foes.
The Miners eked out a 5-3 victory against the host Eskymos before cruising to a 7-0 whitewashing of Menominee.
Next up on Negaunee’s schedule is a meet at yet another GNC opponent, Kingsford, on Monday afternoon.
Here is a synopsis of Thursday’s matches:
Negaunee 5, Escanaba 3
Three singles players carried the match for the Miners as doubles was split 2-2.
Negaunee No. 1 Will Luke and No. 2 Luke Syrjala carried their matches in straight sets as each lost a total of four games.
No. 3 singles teammate Corbin Marshall was extended three sets by Esky’s Nathan Howes before the Miner prevailed 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
The Miners’ No. 1 doubles tandem of Nick Jacobetti and Gavin Saunders was tested early before winning 7-5, 6-2 over Ryan Moreau and Viktor Pospisil.
And Negaunee’s No. 3 doubles duo of Jace Turri and Zack Brundage was pushed late before sweeping following a second-set tiebreaker over Isaac Maki and Dawson Williams, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).
Two of Esky’s three wins came in three sets over Negaunee No. 4 singles player Mick Kumpula and Miners’ No. 4 doubles pair of James Thomson and James Dank.
Negaunee 7, Menominee 0
Luke and the duos of Thomson and Dank and Oglesby and Marcotte each won in straight sets without dropping a single game.
At the other end of the spectrum, Marshall needed three sets to hold off the Maroons’ Brock Murphy, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
