MARQUETTE — Two local ballers were acknowledged in a big way at the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association’s annual meeting last week, one of them to end his high school career and the other to build on for next year.

Marquette senior Ty Lotterman and Westwood junior Zach Beckman were named to the All-U.P. Division 1-3 Second Team.

Lotterman, an unanimous selection, averaged 13.3 points per game and five rebounds on his way to a spot on the All-Great Northern Conference First Team.

Beckman averaged 10.6 points per game and 6.5 rebounds to get his award. He also notched West PAC First Team and Mid-Peninsula Conference Second Team honors.

When asked what made Beckman deserving of an All-U.P. award, Patriots head coach Luke Gray said it’s because of his willingness to do whatever the team needs him to do.

“I think what makes him a good Second Team player is he’s willing to do the little things and stats-wise, he might not be at the top of the U.P. in points per game or rebounds per game, but I think he does a really good job of having a really balanced offensive and defensive game,” Gray said.

“And he’s willing to dive on the floor to get a loose ball, he puts in the extra effort to get a rebound and I think that’s what makes him an All-U.P. player.”
