Calumet girls basketball team advances to MHSAA Division 3 quarterfinals in overtime past St. Ignace, 65-55

SAULT STE. MARIE — The Calumet girls basketball team continued its undefeated season with a 65-55 overtime win over St. Ignace to capture their MHSAA Division 3 regional championship on Wednesday.

The Copper Kings take on Maple City Glen Lake in quarterfinal action on Monday in Houghton Lake.

It took an extra period to get it done as the teams were tied 49-49 at the end of regulation. It was not too surprising as both were neck and neck for most of the game.

Calumet knew it had its work cut out as the extra period got underway, and the Kings’ three big scorers heeded the call. Alexis Strom finished with seven points and Elli Djerf four just in the OT.

For the night, Marybeth Halonen scored 18 points, while Djerf had 17 with three 3-pointers. Strom sunk 13.

The Saints also had three girls reach double figures. Emmalee Hart led the charge with 19 points including three 3s, while Hallie Marshall and Ally Schaltz each had 12 points.

The Saints got off to the quicker start, outscoring the Copper Kings 11-6 after one quarter.

Calumet held a 22-16 second-quarter to attain a narrow 28-27 halftime lead. It stayed close during the third as the teams were tied 39-39 entering the fourth and of course stayed tied entering OT.
