Quartet of 4-event winners lead Marquette swimmers past Kingsford

KINGSFORD — A quartet of Marquette Senior High School swimmers each won four events as MSHS swept to boys and girls victories in a dual meet held at Kingsford on Tuesday afternoon.

The Redmen completed an undefeated regular season by posting a 123-30 win as they won all 11 events — no diving was held — and the Redettes were victorious 101-63 as they won eight events to complete a one-loss campaign.

Grace Sobczak was Marquette’s lone quadruple girls winner as she took the 100-yard freestyle and swam a leg in all three winning relays — the 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free.

A trio of boys chalked up four wins each. Andrew King, Colin VanderSchaaf and Liam McFarren all swam with the 200 medley and 400 free relay victors.

King also won the 200 individual medley and 500 free, VanderSchaaf the 100 free and 200 free and McFarren the 50 free and 100 butterfly.

Two girls were triple winners as Ella Whalen and Delaney Marchiol each swam with the 400 free relay victors.

Whalen also won the 200 IM and was with the 200 medley relay winners, while Marchiol took the 100 fly and was with the 200 free relay winners.

Two boys were double winners, all on relays.

Maverick Baldwin was with the 200 medley relay, Bobby Caron with the 400 free relay and both were on the victorious 200 free relay.

Three girls doubled up in their meet.

Hannah Winn won the 500 free and swam on the 200 free relay, Kelsey Glover took the 100 breaststroke and Lexi LaCombe swam on the 400 free relay as Glover and LaCombe were both with the 200 medley relay.

Other single event winners were, for the Marquette boys, Jackson O’Connor in the 100 backstroke and Kai Chouinard in the 100 breast and Hobey Manson and Alex Gooch in the 200 free relay; and for the Redettes, Elena Henry in the 200 free relay.

Kingsford got girls wins from Adelaide McRoberts in the 200 free and 100 back and Sydney Scott in the 50 free.

Marquette is off until Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, when it will host the Upper Peninsula Finals with diving the first day and swimming events the second.
