Niko Scheibal knocks in only goal of Northern Michigan University Wildcat men’s soccer 1-0 win at Purdue Northwest

HAMMOND, Ind. — The men’s soccer team at Northern Michigan University evened its record at 2-2 while handing Purdue Northwest its first loss of the season with a 1-0 victory on the road on Sunday.

The game’s only goal was scored by freshman defender Niko Scheibal, who also scored his first collegiate goal not quite 10 minutes into the second half.

Scheibal converted on a rather tic-tac-toe-sounding play. Graduate student forward Emanuele Ancione, who scored the game winner last week, took the ball at the top of the box and passed it to junior midfielder Kaffie Kurz, according to an account from NMU Sports Information.

Kurz, who was at the top left corner of the box, passed it to Scheibal near the left post, who leaped and sent the ball into the right side of the net.

PNW (3-1) finished with a 9-8 shots advantage as NMU goalkeeper Alex Weaver made three saves.

Senior forward Brady Kronenburg led the Wildcats with three shots, including one on goal, while Ancione, Kurz, Kalvin Glodz and Arni Eiriksson had one each.

Northern remains on the road for a GLIAC game at Upper Iowa at noon EST Saturday.
