MHSAA wrestling finals changes announced

EAST LANSING — High school wrestling tournaments will have a few revisions based on coronavirus concerns.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced the revisions earlier this week in hopes of reducing the mixing of communities and spread of the virus.

The two-tournament system, one for individuals and one for teams, continues this year, though the individual finals and team final three rounds will shift to Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.

And there will still be district and regional competition leading up to Kalamazoo. Team and individual districts are set for the week beginning Monday, March 15, with regionals the following week.

Rapid testing of COVID-19 for each wrestler allows the traditional format to mostly continue, the MHSAA said.

Most changes affect the finals, starting with its site.

For team finals, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held March 30, all taking place in one day instead of the traditional two days. Two areas within Wings Event Center will be used — “Valley” and “Arena” — for the first two rounds, with finals held in the Arena.

For individual finals, all finals will be held for each division in one day — April 2 for Divisions 2 and 3, April 3 for Divisions 1 and 4. Both Valley and Arena will be used.

Spectator limits at regionals and finals will be determined by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and will not exceed one per participant.
