MARQUETTE — Marquette held off a second-half comeback attempt by Kingsford with a 19-point fourth quarter to win 58-46 in a high school girls basketball game played Tuesday night.

The Redettes opened with a 12-0 run, according to MSHS head coach Ben Smith.

“That was a much needed lift out of the gates,” Smith said.

Maria Millado led all scorers with 19 points, including 6 of 6 on free throws, to lead Marquette. She also pulled down nine rebounds and blocked two shots, while teammate Averie Kelly had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Millado also had four steals and Kelly three.

The Redettes’ Rayna Warchock added 11 points and five rebounds, while Brooklyn Michelin made seven assists to go with her three points and two steals.

Talia Wallis led the Flivvers with 13 points as Elizabeth Cross added 11.

Marquette also won the JV game 64-32.

Escanaba 58, Negaunee 43

At Negaunee, Esky’s Nicole Kamin had a big game, scoring a game-high 27 points.

The Miners’ Alyssa Hill countered her with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

Escanaba led 17-13 after the first quarter and 29-22 at the half. In the third quarter, the Eskymos pulled away as they outscored Negaunee 19-13 to take a big 48-35 advantage into the fourth.

“It was an overall tough night for us,” Miners head coach Mike O’Donnell said. “Escanaba really hurt us in transition, they had way too many run-outs for layups off our missed shots.

“Their zone (defense) also slowed us down. They pack it in and are very athletic and that caused problems for us.”

Baraga 55, Chassell 25

At Chassell, senior Rylie Koskinen scored 18 points to lead the Vikings, who grabbed leads of 13-4 after one quarter, 23-12 at halftime and 40-19 at the completion of the third period.

Baraga sophomore teammate Corina Jahfetson added 11 points, including three 3-pointers, while senior Rylie Osterman scored 10 points.

Nora Huhta and Maelene Warren paced the Panthers with six points apiece.

The Vikings made five triples while Chassell didn’t have any.
