Half-dozen Northern Michigan University Wildcats Nordic skiers qualify for NCAA national championships

Zak Ketterson

MARQUETTE — A half-dozen Nordic skiers from Northern Michigan University — three men and three women — have qualified for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships to be held in Jackson, New Hampshire, on March 11 and 13.

Much of that success stems from their sweep of the men’s, women’s and combined team titles at the NCAA Central Region Championships last weekend in Houghton.

Zak Ketterson, Kjetil Baanerud and Tobias Moosmann got the men’s nods, while Molly Miller, Malin Boerjesjoe and Hilde Eide took honors for the women.

For the men on Saturday, Ketterson won the 10-kilometer classic in 26 minutes, 36.6 seconds, about 32 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Baanerud was runner-up in 27:08.4, while Moosmann was fourth in 27:59.7 and NMU teammate Daniel Streinz fifth in 28:03.4. In addition, Northern’s Xavier Mansfield was ninth in 28:16.1.

Northern’s women on Saturday in the 5K classic were led by Miller as runner-up in 15:10.0 and Eide third in 15:52.7. Boerjesjoe was fourth in 15:55.9, teammate Merle Richter seventh in 16:15.9 and Savanna Fassio eighth in 16:19.0.

Kjetil Baanerud

On Sunday for the men in the 20K skate, Baanerud won in 51:55, a margin of 39 seconds ahead of second place. Moosmann was third in 53:17.4, teammate Marcus Grond fourth in 53:32.4, Streinz seventh in 54:04.5 and Mansfield eighth in 54:22.7.

The NMU women in the 15K skate on Sunday swept the top five spots. Miller won by just over a minute in 49:17.5, with Boerjesjoe runner-up in 50:19.8, Eide third in 50:39.6, Fassio fourth in 50:49.4 and Pearl Harvey fifth in 51:12.0.

Eight women and seven men earned All-Region honors, awarded to the top 10 finishers in each event.
