Sweep on the ski hill: Anna Grzelak posts win as Marquette wins boys, girls championships at Big Powderhorn

BESSEMER — Despite picking up just one individual win, the Marquette Senior High School ski teams used superior depth to easily sweep the boys and girls title at a meet held at Big Powderhorn Mountain on Tuesday.

The one MSHS win was posted by Anna Grzelak in the girls’ giant slalom, winning in a two-run time just 0.08 of a second ahead of Ashley Lemann of Houghton-Hancock.

Grzelak was also second in the slalom, less than second behind winner Gabby Carey of Norway.

But the Redettes were team winners in both GS and slalom for a 36-point total, compared to 60 for runner-up Norway and 68 for third-place Houghton-Hancock.

In the boys meet, Logan Audette and Hayden Kauppila were second in the GS and slalom, respectively, as the Redmen rolled up just 32 points. Runner-up Houghton-Hancock had 68 and third-place Ironwood 86.

The next meet on the Marquette schedule is the MHSAA Division 1 regional at Crystal Mountain near downstate Thompsonville on Wednesday morning.

Girls meet

Grzelak had runs of 30.25 and 31.11 seconds in the GS to win with a combined time of 1:01.36, while Lemann came in with 30.84 and 30.60 for 1:01.44.

Marquette’s Maddie Stern was third in GS with 31.41 and 31.14 for 1:02.55, while teammate Zoey Brian was seventh in 1:03.50 and Lexi Hammerstrom ninth in 1:03.63. Not scoring but adding insurance for the Redettes was Ada Bernard, 12th in 1:05.18, and Lyndsey Lake, 16th in 1:09.79.

In slalom, Grzelak had runs of 40.92 and 42.35 for a total of 1:23.27 as Carey came in at 41.05 and 41.20 for 1:22.25.

Brian was third in 42.04 and 43.06 for 1:25.10, while Bernard was fifth in 41.77 and 43.81 for 1:25.58 and Stern sixth with 42.93 and 43.00 for 1:25.93.

Hammerstrom was ninth in 1:29.43 and Lake 12th in 1:38.92.

Boys meet

Audette was second in the GS with runs of 30.12 and 29.46 for a 59.58 total, about 1.3 seconds behind winner Reed Heathman of Houghton-Hancock, who had 28.74 and 28.51 for 57.25.

Marquette’s Tucker Close was fourth with 31.92 and 31.50 for 1:03.42, while teammate Lloyd O’Connor was fifth with 31.79 and 31.75 for 1:03.54.

The Redmen’s Cole Johnson rounded out team scorers in seventh with 1:05.33, while Ben Kirk provided insurance in 12th in 1:08.70.

In slalom, Kauppila missed the win by about a second and a half, getting runs of 37.31 and 37.53 for 1:14.84 total. Heathman also won this event with 36.71 and 36.65 for 1:13.36.

Marquette actually claimed second through fifth place in slalom. Audette was third with 39.10 and 39.61 for 1:18.71, Close fourth with 41.73 and 42.48 for 1:24.21 and Kirk fifth with 43.55 and 44.16 for 1:27.71.

O’Connor was the team’s insurance policy, coming in eighth in 1:35.36, while Johnson was 11th in 1:40.69.
