Northern Michigan University swimmers, divers star in pool downstate last weekend

UNIVERSITY CENTER — The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving teams combined for a 2-4 record at a pair of meets downstate last weekend.

This concluded the regular season for the men’s and women’s Wildcats as they await the GLIAC Championships to be held Feb. 17-20 in downstate Holland.

On Saturday at Saginaw Valley State in a triangular meet that also included Wayne State, the NMU women defeated the host Cardinals 179-111 while falling to WSU 173-123. The Northern men had similar results, topping SVSU 191-107 and losing to the Warriors 160-138.

On Sunday in Detroit, Wayne State prevailed in both meets, winning the women’s 166-118 and men’s 169-125.

On Saturday, Ondrej Zach and Erikas Kapocius were each men’s double winners.

One of Zach’s wins was in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:38.64, the fourth fastest time nationally in NCAA Division II and a national meet “B” cut time. He also won the 500 free.

Kapocius won the 200 free and 200 individual medley.

Other winning teammates were Roberto Camera in the 100 breaststroke, Ryan Leach in one-meter diving and Thibault Auger in the 200 backstroke.

For the Northern women, Meritxell Font Cantarero took the 200 butterfly, Michaela Nelson the 100 free, Vanessa Steigauf the 500 free and Katharina Springhetti the 200 breast.

In Sunday’s meet, Kapocius starred in the men’s 400 IM, winning in 4:00.36, the 12th fastest time in Division II and a “B” cut time.

Zach recorded a pair of “B” cuts, winning both the 500 and 1,000 free.

Camera was also a double winner, taking the 50 and 100 breast, while Ivan Amillo Escobedo took the 200 free.

For the NMU women, Steigauf won the 1,000 free and Pilar Perello Ferrer took the 500 free.
