Negaunee Miners hold off Marquette Redettes’ comeback attempt in high school girls basketball matchup

NEGAUNEE — Marquette could’ve used a fifth quarter on Tuesday night in a high school girls basketball game played at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee.

The Redettes tried to dig themselves out of a 30-13 halftime hole but couldn’t generate enough offense to complete the deed as the Miners hung on for a 43-33 victory.

“It was a tale of two halves for us,” Negaunee head coach Mike O’Donnell said. “The first half we came out and executed our offense nicely. We hit shots from both inside and perimeter. Maybe the best offense we’ve ran to this point.

“The second half, Marquette really packed it in and we struggled from the perimeter. We are still learning how to play with a lead and understanding the fine line of do we attack, or do we kill clock.”

MSHS knocked one point off Negaunee’s lead in the third quarter, getting to within 39-24 entering the final period.

The Redettes limited the Miners to just four points in those final eight minutes, but was only able to tack on nine points of their own.

Alyssa Hill led Negaunee with 18 points and 11 rebounds with 14 of her points coming in the middle two quarters. Teammate Lilly Nelson scored 14 points on four 3-pointers, all in the first half, and 2-of-2 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter.

The Miners’ Larissa Anderson, who scored four points, also dished out six assists.

Maria Millado paced Marquette with 12 points while Averie Kelly added eight, all in the second half.

Marquette won the JV game 33-27.

Westwood 33, West Iron County 30

At Iron River, the Patriots survived a fourth-quarter comeback attempt by the host Wykons, who sank five 3-pointers in the final eight minutes. For the whole game, West Iron made six triples to none for Westwood.

Offense was hard to come by in the first half as the Patriots held WIC scoreless in the first quarter and led 14-3 at halftime. WHS maintained a 21-11 lead after three quarters, too.

Westwood’s Natalie Prophet and Ellie Miller led all scorers with 10 points, while teammate Emily Nelson contributed five.

Ishpeming 40, Manistique 23

At Manistique, a stout defense allowed the Hematites to not only survive, but continue to hold a lead even after a three-point second quarter.

Ishpeming still led 16-13 at halftime, then increased its advantage to 28-19 by the end of the third quarter.

Hematites freshman Jenna Maki was the only player to score in double figures as she finished with 16 points with half coming in the first quarter.

Teammate Jocelynn Nyman added eight points and Hannah DeLoughary seven.

Baylee Allor paced the Emeralds with eight points.

Iron Mountain 46, Gwinn 38

At Gwinn, Tianna Taylor scored 18 points and teammate Eliina Miilu 11 for the Modeltowners.

Baraga 40, L’Anse 36

At L’Anse, the Vikings won the Battle of the Bay by catching and passing the Purple Hornets after L’Anse led 30-28 entering the fourth quarter.

The Hornets led 6-5 after one quarter before Baraga took a 19-17 halftime lead.

“This was a back-and-forth rivalry game,” Vikings coach Tom Goodreau said. “We had some good looks at the basket, but they just weren’t falling.

“L’Anse did a good job defensively in the first (half). In the second half, we did a much better job with our pressure, which helped on the offensive end.”

The Hornets’ Maija Rice led all scorers with 15 points, making 5 of 5 free throws.

Rylie Koskinen paced Baraga with 14 points as teammate Reide Osterman added nine and Corina Jahfetson eight. Koskinen and Jahfetson each sank a pair of 3-pointers while Osterman made one.

Jaylyne Lindeman led Vikings rebounders with five, while Koskinen and Autumn Tembreull had four apiece. Osterman had two assists and two steals, while Koskinen had two steals.
