Eli Luokkala leads Negaunee Miners in 2nd half of boys basketball win at Gwinn, 51-42

GWINN — Eli Luokkala scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter to lead Negaunee to a 51-42 high school boys basketball victory at Gwinn on Monday evening.

Teammate Gerald Johnson got nine of his 17 points in the fourth quarter.

Luokkala helped the Miners break open the game after the teams were tied 17-17 at halftime. Negaunee went up 33-25 entering the final period.

“They went on a 7-0 run right out of halftime and we weren’t able to recover,” Gwinn head coach Ben Olsen said. “We had it cut to four (points) a couple of different times but couldn’t get over the hump.

“Gerald Johnson seemed to make big shots every time we got close and Eli (Luokkala) was a problem at times.”

Johnson helped cement the verdict in the fourth despite the Modeltowners breaking loose for 17 points in those eight minutes.

Carl Peterson nearly shot his Gwinn team back into the game in the second half, making four 3-pointers, three in the final quarter, and finishing with 15 points.

The Modeltowners also got 11 points from James Harnick and 10 from Reid Hill.

Calumet 57, Ishpeming 49

At Ishpeming, the Hematites collapsed in the fourth quarter, squandering a huge 45-29 lead they had at the end of the third period.

The Copper Kings outscored Ishpeming 28-4 in the quarter as Brevin Antilla and Kip Kangas combined to score 23 of those points. Antilla had 13 and Kangas 10.

Each finished with 18 points, matching the total of the Hematites’ Jayce Kipling.

Calumet did a little of everything in the fourth, making three 3-pointers, six 2-pointers and 7 of 9 free throws. Meanwhile, Ishpeming managed just one 2-point bucket each from Kipling and Logan Hurkmans.

Griffin Argall contributed 10 points to the Ishpeming cause.

The Kings held a narrow 13-11 lead after one quarter before the Hematites reversed it and took a 26-24 advantage at halftime. Three players each hit a triple and Argall had six points in a solid third quarter that gave Ishpeming its 16-point lead.

Gladstone 64, Westwood 42

At Ishpeming, the Braves broke the game open in the third quarter, turning a 26-19 halftime advantage into a 47-31 lead entering the final period.

Garrett Sundberg led Westwood with 14 points as he hit four 3-pointers, two each in the second and third quarters, while teammate Zach Carlson added 11 points.

Gladstone’s Cam Ballard scored a game-high 20 points.

Norway 59, Superior Central 28

At Eben, the Cougars’ offense was stuck in neutral for most of the night, enabling the visiting Knights to take control in the middle two quarters.

Tied 9-9 after one quarter, Norway built leads of 23-12 at halftime and 43-17 after three quarters.

Kyle Frusti scored more than half the Cougars’ points with 16, which was the game high and included a pair of 3-pointers.

Logan Parolini paced the Knights with 13 points as Alex Ortman had 11.

Bessemer 68, Republic-Michigamme 50

At Republic, Derek Koski scored 21 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to keep the Speed Boys from breaking things open in the second half.

Leading 32-29 at halftime, Bessemer outscored R-M 19-3 in the third quarter to go up 51-32 entering the final period.

Logan Hanninen and Gabe Dupont added 12 points apiece for the Hawks.

Marquette 66, Gladstone 51

At Marquette on Saturday, Kam Karp poured in 23 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while teammate Lincoln Sager added 15 points with three triples and Ty Lotterman scored 12 points.

The Braves played their third game in five days, something necessary in the short, compressed season due to the late start.

“(It) doesn’t get easier. We play five games in the next eight days,” Gladstone head coach Mike Cretens said. “We (had) Westwood Monday, Kingsford Thursday, Esky Friday, Iron Mountain (next) Monday and Marquette (next) Tuesday.

“It’s going to be crazy. We have to be ready and give it everything we got every time we are on that court. Even when we don’t have it.”

The Redmen, now 4-1, used the middle two quarters to shake the visitors, trailing 19-17 after one quarter before taking a 39-33 lead at halftime. MSHS then used a 20-6 third quarter to go up 59-39 entering the final period.
