3-game playoff run helps Marquette net Team of Year in All-Upper Peninsula high school football awards

MARQUETTE — It was quite a year for the Marquette Senior High School football team.

The Redmen won their first MHSAA playoff game in a decade, then upset Mount Pleasant on the road the following week before getting eliminated by powerhouse Muskegon.

So it was no surprise Wednesday when it was announced that MSHS was named the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Large School Team of the Year. Iron Mountain won for small schools.

“What more can you say?” MSHS coach Eric Mason said. “Some of this stuff is fantastic and I just enjoy it so much for the kids. These kids like Austin (Ridl), Des (Mullen) and (Ty) Lotterman, these kids just put so much time in and never gave up.

“Even when the season was gonna be for naught and they thought maybe we’d play in the spring, they were talking about practices.”
