Upper Peninsula Soccer Championships set for Saturday in Marquette
MARQUETTE — Fans will be admitted to the Upper Peninsula Soccer Championships to be held at the Kaufman Sports Complex in north Marquette on Saturday.
This boys high school tournament will feature the host Redmen, Iron Mountain, Kingsford and Houghton playing a round-robin format with a pair of fields being used for simultaneous games with starting times ranging from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Another similar soccer event featuring four smaller programs — the Marquette JV, Negaunee, Sault Ste. Marie and Copper Country Christian — is tentatively also scheduled for Saturday in Negaunee and hosted by the Negaunee Soccer Club. Information wasn’t available by today’s press time for that event.
For the Marquette tourney on Saturday, games will have 30-minute halves with a five-minute halftime period. Five-player shootouts will determine winners for games that end in ties.
Admission is $5 per person and medals will be presented to the team champion, runner-up and third-place finishers, with a trophy for the championship team.
Organizers established a tiebreaking procedure in this order — head-to-head, goal differential, fewest goals allowed, and finally, a shootout.
Here is the game schedule:
10 a.m. — Iron Mountain vs. Kingsford, Field 1; Marquette vs. Houghton, Field 3
12:30 p.m. — Houghton vs. Iron Mountain, Field 1; Kingsford vs. Marquette, Field 3
2:30 p.m. — Houghton vs. Kingsford, Field 1; Marquette vs. Iron Mountain, Field 3
