MARQUETTE — Marquette solidified its hold at the top of the 11-player weekly high school football poll that was released Tuesday by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

MSHS (4-1) went from being the narrow No. 1 choice a week ago with just one first-place vote to the unanimous pick this week with all five first-place votes and the maximum possible 25 total voting points.

Kingsford (3-1) moved up a spot from third to second while receiving all the second-place votes, while Sault Ste. Marie (3-2) slipped to third with nine points.

Houghton (2-1), which beat Negaunee in overtime on Friday, claimed fourth place with six points, just one point ahead of a trio of teams tied for the final top-five spot — Calumet (2-2), Iron Mountain (5-0) and Menominee (3-2).

One area teams also made the 8-player rankings, as Munising (4-1) slipped from third to fifth after suffering its first loss on Friday and got to four points.

Defending state champion Pickford (4-1) claimed three first-place votes to hold onto the No. 1 spot by just one point over No. 2 North Central (5-0), which earned the other two first-place votes.

Cedarville (4-1) was in third with 14 points with Lake Linden-Hubbell (2-3) getting fourth and Forest Park (3-1) just missing the top five by one vote.

The UPSSA changed to two polls this fall because the season began with an equal number of teams, 18, playing both the 11- and eight-player games.

With the suspension of extracirrucular activites at Negaunee Public Schools for the next two weeks, including sports, the Westwood at Negaunee won’t be held on Thursday evening.

The Gwinn at Gogebic Miners game scheduled for Bessemer will be played at 2 p.m. EDT Saturday.
