MARQUETTE — With MHSAA district tournaments opening on Monday evening, Marquette won’t have to worry about seeing Calumet again.

They might say good riddance to the Copper Kings as Calumet handed the Redettes their only two losses of the regular season.

Playing at the Barb Crill Gymnasium at MSHS on Thursday, visiting Calumet beat Marquette in three sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-20, to leave the Redettes with a final regular-season record of 13-2 overall. They also went 7-0 in the Great Northern Conference.

Marquette will play in a Division 1 district at home at 6 p.m. Monday against Alpena, while Calumet is entered in a District 3 tourney it is also hosting next week.

“We knew it would be a battle, and it was,” MSHS head coach Ann Crandell-Williams said. “They are a very strong team and covered the floor well. They served tough and we had more misses than usual in our serving.

“We hope to take what we learned … and use that toward Monday’s district game.”

Junior Maria Millado led the Redettes’ offense with 11 kills, along with contributing five blocks, six digs and a service ace.

Fellow junior Seiler Hruska had seven kills and nine digs, while Katelyn Dunleavy made 20 set assists, Taylor Marquardt two kills and three digs and Taylor Ragusett three kills and an ace.

Though it is district host, the MHSAA website shows that Marquette will have to travel to Traverse City West at 6 p.m. Wednesday for its second district match if it wins Monday.

A win downstate would bring the Redettes back home to face either Traverse City Central or Petoskey for the district championship at 6 p.m. Friday.
