Marquette Redettes finish volleyball sweep of Escanaba

MARQUETTE — Marquette defeated Escanaba on Tuesday night in a high school volleyball match to complete a sweep in a week’s time of their Great Northern Conference rivals.

Playing at the Barb Crill Gymnasium in Marquette, the Redettes downed the Eskymos in four sets on Tuesday after beating EHS in five sets at their gym on Thursday.

Tuesday’s victory by Marquette was 25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24 as the Redettes improved to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the GNC.

In other matches played Tuesday, Gwinn defeated Bark River-Harris in five sets, winning the first set 31-29 and final set 15-10, while Superior Central lost in four sets against Rapid River.

Back in Marquette, MSHS head coach Ann Crandell-Williams felt Tuesday’s match was just as competitive as the five-setter played last week against the Eskymos.

“Although we won in four sets, (Tuesday) somehow felt like a tighter match than last Thursday,” she said. “Esky had made some adjustments and came at us pretty hard. Our team’s mental game was a bit more of a struggle tonight.

“Volleyball is a game of mistakes and tolerating the ups and downs, and they managed to pull through in the end. I think the hard work they’ve put in really helped with that.”

Junior Seiler Hruska was her usual attacking self, leading the Redettes with 22 kills while adding six service aces and six digs.

Junior teammate Katelyn Dunleavy contributed 37 set assists, two aces and six digs, while yet another junior, Maria Millado, made 13 kills, seven blocks, two aces, four digs and three assists.

And continuing from the 11th-grade class, Roxy Nelson had five kills, four aces and a block, while junior Taylor Marquardt had three kills, two aces and two digs.

For the seniors, Celinda Brunswick had five digs, Taylor Ragusett three kills and an ace and Ashlee Blom three digs.

Marquette has another big home match at 7 p.m. Thursday when the Redettes host Calumet, the only team that MSHS has lost to this season. The perennially strong Copper Kings prevailed on Sept. 14 in Calumet in four sets.
