NEGAUNEE — Despite not being able to attend the conference meet on Friday, Ishpeming did well when it came to high school cross country honors in the West PAC.

Honors were determined on Friday during the conference meet held at the Negaunee Township Hall trails, but it was also the first full day that Ishpeming canceled sporting events for the time being due to coronavirus quarantine restrictions.

For the Hematites, that started with freshman Lola Korpi earning the Girls Runner of the Year honor. Ishpeming also had five boys and two girls earn all-conference.

All their honors were earned from the Hematites’ top-flight finishes at earlier meets since late August.

Houghton was the overall winner after sweeping team titles at the conference meet. In addition to those team honors, the Gremlins’ Eric Weiss was named Boys Runner of the Year and Traci Welch the Boys and Girls Coach of the Year, while six boys and three girls earned all-West PAC.

Westwood had three girls and two boys earn all-conference, while Negaunee netted three girls and a boy.

The balance of honors were claimed by Calumet, Hancock and West Iron County.

From Ishpeming, all-conference honorees for the boys were Joe King, Jordan Longtine, Parker Gauthier, Silas Broberg and David Liimatta. Girls earning accolades were Korpi and Taylor Longtine.

For Westwood, Heidi Meglathery, Elizabeth Williams and Retta Boburka were named for girls, while Ted Hair and Jacob Jestila earned all-conference for the boys.

And from Negaunee, girls netting laurels were Endla Harris, Seere Helms-Gleason and Lauren Ossenheimer, while for the boys it was James Dank.
