Ishpeming Hematites, Negaunee Miners fall in high school volleyball matches

IRON RIVER — The hard-luck Ishpeming Hematites volleyball team lost another five-set match at West Iron County on Tuesday after suffering a similar fate twice last week.

The Wykons prevailed 25-15, 21-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11 as Ishpeming fell to 2-9.

Last week, the Hematites also lost at Gwinn and at Westwood, each in five sets.

On Tuesday, Megan Racine led Ishpeming with seven kills and five service aces. She added three digs and two blocks.

Hanna DeLoughary had a whopping 46 digs among the 101 recorded by the Hematites, also making four aces and a kill.

Three players were right behind Racine in kills with six apiece — Emily Morton, Rylee Harris and Olivia Corp. Morton added 13 digs and three aces, whle Harris had 12 digs and Corp a team-high three blocks.

And Faith Loman contributed four kills, three digs and two kills, while Abigail Bruhnke had 10 digs, two blocks, two aces and 23 set assists.

Calumet 3, Negaunee 0

The powerful Copper Kings traveled to Negaunee and came out with a 25-20, 25-18, 25-13 victory.

The Miners’ Natalie Bell led her team with four kills and four blocks, while teammate Cami Rajala added six digs and Larissa Anderson 14 set assists.
