Schedule changes: 3 Marquette County high school football teams make alterations

MARQUETTE — Three Marquette County high school football teams have had their new opening weekends of the reset season affected.

Two will not play, with a third, Marquette Senior High School, has a new opponent and slightly new opening kickoff time.

It was announced previously that Ishpeming High School won’t field a team this fall as not enough players have come out to safely field a team.

Westwood will also not play this Friday’s scheduled home game against Iron Mountain as the Patriots said they have too many injuries to safely field a team, according to Iron Mountain athletic director Donny Bianco, who spoke to the Iron Mountain Daily News.

WHS hopes to be back on the gridiron the following Friday, Sept. 25, when they’re scheduled to play at Manistique.

Marquette, meanwhile, was affected by a similar decision by Gladstone, this Friday’s original home opponent.

Athletic director Alex Tiseo announced Sunday that MSHS has replaced the Braves with Menominee, which will also travel to Marquette. Because the Redmen already play at Menominee on Oct. 9, this Friday’s game will be considered a nonconference game.

In addition, after Tiseo announced late last week that Marquette’s three home games will be played at 6 p.m., the late change for this Friday, likely coupled with the distance Menominee has to travel, not to mention the time-zone difference, prompted this weekend’s start time to move back to the traditional 7 p.m. EDT.

Tiseo said MSHS’ other two home games, on Sept. 25 vs. Sault Ste. Marie and Oct. 16 vs. Escanaba, are still set for 6 p.m. starts.
