Marquette Redettes zip past Munising Mustangs 8-0 in girls tennis

MARQUETTE — Marquette didn’t drop a set in posting an 8-0 victory over visiting Munising in a high school girls tennis match held Wednesday afternoon.

With the Upper Peninsula Finals to be played next week, MSHS head coach Derek Sandstrom was pleased that his team is gearing up for the season’s home stretch.

“I was happy (with) the doubles teams’ focus and (that they) played well,” he said.

The Redettes dropped just 15 games in the seven contested matches, one of the tougher ones being Ruth Hummell’s 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jenna Matson at No. 2 singles.

“Ruth faced a tough first set, but she found her game in the second set, played smart and took advantage of opportunities when they presented themselves,” Sandstrom said.

The same 6-3, 6-1 score was posted by Marquette’s No. 2 doubles team of Alyson LaBelle and Hannah Young over the Mustangs’ Lori Mattson and Payton Coty.

Marquette does have one more match on its schedule, a home meet against Westwood at 4 p.m. Monday.
