Marquette Redettes sweep doubles in high school girls tennis win over Menominee

MARQUETTE — Marquette swept through the doubles matches without dropping a set in a 6-2 high school girls tennis victory over visiting Menominee on Friday.

The Redettes split the four singles matches, which included a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback victory by Ruth Hummell over the Maroons’ Erin Barrette at No. 3.

Marquette also won at No. 4 singles when Julianna Golisek took out Mackenzie Wellner 6-0, 6-1.

Losses were suffered by the Redettes’ Campbell Kallio at No. 1 singles, a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Jenna Nolde, and Haddie Ketzenberger at No. 2, who fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to Josie Hofer.

“Ruth gutted out a tough match, winning a third set,” MSHS head coach Derek Sandstrom said. “Julianna also continues to improve as she gets used to singles.

“At (Nos.) 1 and 2 singles, we ran into two players with a lot of experience, but Haddie and Campbell played well.”

The top two flights in doubles were also well contested, with No. 1 Zoey Brian and Bre Sandstrom winning 6-3, 6-3 over Emma Anderson and Rylee Doyle, and No. 2 Alyson LaBelle and Hannah Young putting up a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Anna Nerat and Kennedy Olson.

Marquette’s No. 3 doubles tandem of Eliina Brazeau and Kaia Miller and No. 4 doubles pairing of Nistha Gautam and Lyndsey Lake each dropped just one game in their straight-sets victories.

The Redettes begin three straight days of matches on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Munising at 4 p.m. that day, then traveling to Menominee at 3 p.m. Thursday before finishing the streak with a makeup match at home against Negaunee at 3 p.m. Friday.
