KINGSFORD — A trio of Marquette Senior High School boys soccer players scored two goals each as the Redmen took a 7-1 victory at Kingsford on Thursday evening.

While the Flivvers’ goal marked the end of a five-match shutout streak, nevertheless the Redmen have outscored their opposition 38-1 in their last six games.

It also meant that Marquette has scored at least five goals in each of four games vs. Kingsford this season.

MSHS senior Connor Johnson and junior Alex Vermaat scored a goal in each half Thursday while sophomore Nick Asmus scored the final two goals.

“Johnson’s second goal was pure effort, trapping a high ball while fending off a defender then putting it in with his left foot,” Marquette head coach Dan Salmon said. “It was the play of the game.

“Kingsford played us tough tonight and I am happy with how we responded. Cam Larson played some exceptional defense while Vermaat added some solid offensive play.”

The other goal was scored by junior Nick Lindberg, who also had two assists. Freshman Ethan Sandstrom added two assists.

Kingsford got its goal from Cedric Henricksen after the Redmen had already built a 6-0 lead.

Senior Liam Jeevar worked in the net for Marquette (6-0-1) as he faced 10 shots.

MSHS scored twice in the first half with goals by Johnson and Vermaat and assists going to Lindberg and Sandstrom.

In the second half, Lindberg, Vermaat, Johnson scored before Asmus knocked in two of his shots. Assists were credited to Sandstrom, Lindberg, sophomore Max Dawson, junior Hayden Byma, sophomore Ezra Pickard and junior John Weber.

Next up for Marquette is a home game against Iron Mountain on Thursday.
