Ishpeming boys perfect at WIN meet in high school cross country

NEGAUNEE — He no doubt still wants to see improvement, but Ishpeming High School cross country coach P.J. Pruett could be happy about his Hematites boys achieving perfection at the WIN meet held Thursday afternoon at the trails adjacent to the Negaunee Township Hall.

Ishpeming’s boys swept the top five places to score a perfect cross country score of 15 points, far outdistancing Westwood’s 51 and Negaunee’s 61.

The three schools get together for WIN meets like this in numerous sports throughout the year, with WIN standing for the trio — Westwood, Ishpeming and Negaunee.

While the Hematites’ Lola Korpi won the girls individual race, Westwood carried off the team title by placing three of the next five runners, including runner-up Heidi Meglathery.

The Patriots scored 31 points to 40 for Negaunee and 54 for Ishpeming.

Here are details about each meet:

A pair of Westwood runners separated by less than a half-second were next. Jacob Jestila clocked 19:50.04 for seventh and Jake Johnson finished in 19:50.45 for eighth.

Ishpeming snuck one more runner into the top 10 just for insurance as Chase Ettenhofer was ninth in 19:52, while the Patriots’ Ted Hair completed the group in 10th in 20:09.
