Gwinn volleyball team prevails in 5 sets at West Iron County

IRON RIVER — Gwinn needed five sets but finally came out victorious in a high school volleyball match at West Iron County on Tuesday night.

The Modeltowners prevailed 22-25, 25-7, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12 as the Wykon JV won in two sets.

“We could not keep consistency tonight,” GHS head coach Toni Hantz said. “WIC was a hard-working, scrappy team that chased down a lot of balls…. They had no quit and made us earn our points and we didn’t do that great (of) a job consistently…. We were too streaky and couldn’t put together solid runs.

“Overall, I am happy they pulled out a win, but it took a lot to get there and we made way too many serving errors. We are starting to connect better as a team, but really need to push our consistency and be able to put together a whole match, and not just one set at a time.”

Hantz added that senior captains Halle Beauchamp and Tianna Taylor led Gwinn with strong hitting performances, though kill totals weren’t available.

“Together they had more than the rest of the team combined, as well as impressive serving with zero missed serves for either,” Hantz said.

Senior Elliina Millu was dominant at the net with five of her team’s seven solo blocks as Tianna Taylor had the other two. Sophomore Lena Pleaugh lead the offense with 34 assists and the defense with nine digs. Shanna LaRock added eight digs, while Taylor, Blaze Houle and Jorge Hardy had seven apiece.
