Trio of Newberry boys basketball players honored in Straits Area Conference

RUDYARD — Thanks to the efforts of Rudyard High School varsity boys basketball coach Jim Suggitt, all-league boys basketball teams for the Straits Area Conference have become available.

Three Newberry players were honored — senior Jared Wallace on the All-Defensive Team and junior Logan Depew and senior Luke Jordan on the Second Team.

Jordan was also a Second Team honoree in the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference, while Depew earned honorable mention in the EUP and also in All-Upper Peninsula Division 4 balloting.

The Straits named a pair of players from its co-champions, Cheboygan and Rudyard, to share the Player of the Year honor.

Rudyard sophomore EJ Suggitt, who averaged 18.3 points per game, and Cheboygan senior David Millmine, who averaged 17.5 ppg, each earned the honor.

Suggitt was also a First Team honoree in the EUP as both Newberry and Rudyard are dual members.

The Straits loop include larger schools in the eastern U.P. along with Cheboygan in the Lower Peninsula, while the EUP includes Division 4 schools in the eastern U.P., including several that have bounced between Division 3 and 4.

Newberry and Rudyard each are members of both leagues.
