MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University senior Caro Els of the African country of Namibia earned conference honors for the third straight season as she was named to the All-GLIAC Second Team.

Els competed in all four meets last fall, plus one that was held in the spring season before the coronavirus pandemic canceled the rest of the season.

She opened her 2019-20 season in September by finishing third at the Saginaw Valley State University Fall Invitational in Bay City after rounds of 75 on the first day and 76 the second day for a 151 total.

She then competed in the Lady Bulldog Invitational at Ferris State in Big Rapids two weeks later and finished seventh, shooting 83 in bad weather to tie for 19th. Due to that weather, the second day was canceled.

At the William Beall Fall Classic in Findlay, Ohio, in early October, Els tallied 235 for 24th on rounds of 75, 79 and 81.

Her final event in the fall in late October saw her tie for second at the Kohler Classic in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She opened with 85, then followed it with 79 for 164.

The Wildcats traveled south to get in one meet this spring, which was actually still in winter.

At the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff in Tampa, Florida, on March 5-7, Els finished in a tie for fifth with 241 on rounds of 86, 76 and 79.

There were to be four more meets on the schedule, not including any NCAA playoffs, according to the NMU schedule available at the university’s sports website, www.nmuwildcats.com.

The final one was to have been the GLIAC Championships this weekend at Gull Lake View Golf Club in Augusta, located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.

Because of the cancellation of most of the spring schedule, GLIAC all-conference nominations were based on Golfstat rankings.
