Marquette Redmen sweep Great Northern Conference boys hoops’ top awards

ESCANABA — Five Marquette Senior High School players and their coach not only won seven honors, but swept the major awards when the Great Northern Conference held its boys basketball coaches’ postseason meeting on Friday in Escanaba.

Brad Nelson was named Coach of the Year for leading the Redmen to a 7-1 league record and the varsity championship. MSHS is also 18-3 overall heading into tonight’s MHSAA Division 1 district semifinal game at home against Gaylord.

For the Marquette players, junior guard Kameron Karp was named Player of the Year, while senior teammate Drew Wyble, a forward, earned Defensive Player of the Year laurels.

Four players earned all-league mention, including Wyble being named to the Second Team.

Junior forward Ty Lotterman earned a spot on the First Team, while senior forward John Thomson and junior guard Lincoln Sager made Special Mention.

Escanaba won the junior varsity title with a 6-2 record as Kingsford at 8-0 was the freshman champion.

Second Team — Cole Bracket, Kingsford; Carter Hudson, Escanaba; Aidan Bellisle, Menominee; Brandon Frazer, Escanaba

Special mention — Noah Ballard, Gladstone; Andrew Paupore, Kingsford

Honorable mention — Brock Barrette, Menominee; Bryant Maki and Connor Smale, Escanaba; Jarret St. John and Caden Alworden, Gladstone
