Westwood tops WIC in regional rematch

Manistique defeats Ishpeming

ISHPEMING – The Westwood girls basketball team got a tough battle from West Iron County in last year’s MHSAA regional semifinal, and chances were, the Patriots would get another one Tuesday night.

Instead, the Patriots used a strong second quarter to build up a big lead and held on in the second half to earn a 59-38 victory. Tessa Leece led Westwood with 20 points, while Natalie Prophet had 14 points and Madi Koski had 10. Emily Nelson was WIC’s leader with 14 points.

“I thought we showed good patience early on and played a controlled game,” Patriots head coach Kurt Corcoran said. “We were able to score 34 first half points, 11 of which came on the back of Natalie in the second quarter. She’s got such good body control and was able to get Nelson in foul trouble early in the half by driving to the hole. We hounded Nelson all night and made her work for every point. She’s a tough post player. One of the best in the U.P. with a great inside presence and the ability to shoot a true jump shot from 15 (feet) and beyond. Ellie (Miller) was able to keep her in check most of the night along with our help defense”

Down 34-14 in the third quarter, the Wykons tried to rally, outscoring the Patriots 16-13, but the deficit was too much to overcome. Westwood hosts Gwinn Thursday.

Manistique 37, Ishpeming 31

At Ishpeming, the Emeralds pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn a close win over the Hematites.

Emma Poirier led Ishpeming with nine points, while Emilee McDaniel was Manistique’s leader with 11.

“We had a streak of bad possessions that allowed Manistique to capitalize off our missed shots,” Hematites head coach Ryan Reichel said. “Credit to Manistique for hitting free throws the stretch.”

Ishpeming held a slim 13-11 advantage at the half, but the Emeralds tied it at 17-17 after the third quarter and then outscored the Hematites 20-14 in the fourth to get the win.

Ishpeming hosts Kingsford Thursday.
