Westwood Patriots hang on against game Modeltowners girls basketball team

GWINN — Westwood made up a fourth-quarter deficit and hung on in the end to post a 38-37 victory at Gwinn in a high school girls basketball game played Monday night.

The Modeltowners led 30-25 entering the final quarter before the Patriots’ Tessa Leece hit a 3-pointer to tie the score at 34-34.

“Leece made a huge step-back 3 to tie it,” GHS coach Ben Olsen said. “We came back down and Marissa (Delmont) had a driving layup that she made that was called a charge.”

Delmont, who hit a pair of 3-pointers, finished with nine points and five assists as teammate Emily Curtice led all scorers with 19, including a trio of treys.

Leece paced Westwood with 17 points, including two triples and 5 of 6 at the free throw line. All but two of her points came in the second half as teammate Natalie Prophet added 10 points.

After the charge on Delmont, Prophet executed her own “and-one” three-point play to give Westwood a lead before Leece hit 1 of 2 on a one-and-one free throw opportunity to make it 38-34.

Though it may have looked impossible with time winding down, Curtice hit a halfcourt triple with 1.1 seconds left to cut Gwinn’s deficit to one. However, the Pats were able to inbound the ball and run out the rest of the clock, according to Olsen.

“We played a heck of a game against a really good team and came up just short,” Olsen said. “(It was a) great team effort and I hope this proves to my team that we can play with most anybody in the conference and Upper Peninsula.”

Westwood also won the JV game 48-37.
