Westwood, Marquette girls basketball teams zoom to victories

MANISTIQUE — Leading seniors Tessa Leece and Madi Koski combined for 40 points to lead Westwood to a 66-35 girls basketball victory at Manistique on Friday night.

Leece made two 3-pointers and scored 22 points, while Koski sank four triples and added 18 points.

Leece also grabbed seven rebounds and made six assists, three steals and had a blocked shot, while Koski nabbed six caroms, collected eight assists and had three steals.

Teammate Karlie Patron added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds to go with two steals.

The Patriots shot just a shade under 50 percent — 48.1 percent — overall, with right around 48 or 49 percent on both 2-pointers and 3s.

Brooke St. John paced the Emeralds with 11 points, while Emilee McDaniel added nine.

Westwood grabbed a 35-23 halftime lead before really opening things up in the second half.

Marquette 52, Kingsford 32

At Marquette, the Redettes’ Aspen Michelin and Maria Millado each scored a game-high 14 points, the only players in double figures for either team.

Michelin added a team-high five steals and four assists to go with three rebounds, while Millado had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Teammate Madison Cater added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots.

Olivia Olkkonen scored six points to pace Kingsford.

Marquette jumped out to an 18-10 lead after one quarter, clamping down on defense in the second period to take a 30-13 halftime lead.

The Redettes also won the JV game 44-40, while the Flivvers prevailed in the freshman contest 35-34.
