ISHPEMING — The Westwood girls basketball team added another two trophies to its case Thursday evening as the Patriots topped Gwinn 38-27 to win both the Mid-Peninsula Conference and West PAC championships for the second year in a row.

Madi Koski led the Patriots with 11 points, while Tianna Taylor had seven for the Modeltowners.

“Megan Johnson, a senior starting on senior night, opened the game up with a 3,” Westwood head coach Kurt Corcoran said. “The crowd loved it and it was well deserving.

“Other than that, it was a pretty slow first half, but we were finally able to break the game open a little bit when Madi got Emily Curtice, a premier defender, in foul trouble with her fourth in the third quarter. We went on a 16-5 run and finished the game 9 of 10 at the (free throw) line.”

The teams were tied 9-9 after one quarter as Westwood led 13-12 at the half. Then in the third quarter, the Patriots got into a groove as they outscored Gwinn 16-5.

The MHSAA Division 3 district tournament begins Monday. Westwood plays Ishpeming and Gwinn travels to Negaunee.

Kingsford 47, Ishpeming 39

At Ishpeming, the Flivvers kept the Hematites scoreless in the first quarter and held off a late rally.

Kingsford’s Brooke Kriegl led all scorers with 15 points, while Emma Poirier had 14 for Ishpeming.

“We didn’t score in the first quarter, but we found a way to crawl back into the game,” Hematites head coach Ryan Reichel said. “I was happy that we didn’t lay down and quit playing hard after that.

“After the first quarter, we settled down and won the rest of the quarters.”

The Flivvers led 11-0 after one and 24-15 at the half.

Baraga 80, Republic-Michigamme 17

At Republic, the Vikings broke the game open early with a dominant first quarter and cruised.

Four Baraga players finished in double digits with Rylie Koskinen leading the way with 21 points. Allie Radcliffe had 11 points for R-M.

The Vikings held a commanding 27-0 advantage after the first quarter and led 47-4 at the half.

Next week, Baraga opens MHSAA Division 4 District play at home against Dollar Bay, while the Hawks host North Dickinson.

Stephenson 57, Superior Central 31

At Eben, the Cougars were led by sophomore Emma Rutter with 13 points but were unable to recover from a 20-3 deficit after one quarter.

Superior Central (1-19) opens the MHSAA Division 4 district tournament on Monday facing Rapid River (5-13).
