Marquette spreads out scoring in girls basketball win vs. Houghton

HOUGHTON — The Marquette Senior High School varsity girls basketball team had four players score in double figures on Thursday night as it topped Houghton for the second time in nine days.

The Redettes picked up their third straight win, topping the Gremlins 70-41 as Aspen Michelin led the way with 14 points. Following her was teammate Rayna Warchock with 13, Sofia van den Ende 11 and Maddie Carter 10.

“We played hard as a group and we’re just trying to keep getting better down the stretch,” MSHS head coach Ben Smith said.

The Redettes improved to 12-6 with two games remaining on the regular-season slate. MSHS opens the MHSAA Division 1 district tournament by visiting Petoskey (6-12) on March 2.

Marquette jumped out to the early lead, holding the Gremlins (6-13) to eight points in each of the first two quarters and leading 38-16 at halftime.

MSHS put up 74 shots, with 28 going in for a 37.8 percent shooting performance. The Redettes were also 9 of 16 at the free throw line and picked up 54 rebounds with Carter getting 10.

Molly Bugni led the Gremlins with 13 points.

Marquette hosts Upper Peninsula Divisions 1-3 No. 5 Negaunee (13-5) on Tuesday. The Redettes claimed the first contest against the Miners this season 35-32 on Dec. 17.

Wakefield-Marenisco 78, Republic-Michigamme 35

At Wakefield, the Hawks (0-18) received 14 points from Allie Radcliffe and 11 from Tailyn Raisanen, but it wasn’t enough to climb out of a 17-4 deficit after one quarter.

The Cardinals (6-11) continued to pour it on, scoring 45 points through the middle two frames to go up 62-30 after three quarters.

Carlee Yon went off for 33 points to lead W-M while Julia Tarro had 15.

R-M visits Dollar Bay (3-15) on Monday before closing out the regular season with a home tilt against Upper Peninsula Division 4 No. 3 Baraga (16-3) on Thursday.

The Hawks open its postseason facing U.P. No. 5 North Dickinson (16-2) in the Division 4 district tournament on March 2.
