Manistique falls in team district wrestling championship match

IRON MOUNTAIN — With a full roster and plenty of determination, Bark River-Harris won its first high school wrestling team district title on Thursday, defeating Manistique 69-10 in the finals.

In the semifinals, the Emeralds fended off Iron Mountain 35-29.

In the championship, Manistique’s Tony Williams recorded the only pin for the Emeralds at 130, pinning Katie Viau. At 285, MHS senior Isaac Brewster recorded a major decision over the Broncos’ Fabian Chartier.

“We were shorthanded today in both duals, with a lot of first year wrestlers. We’re trying to get better with each match,” Manistique head coach Mat Gonzalez said. “We gotta hit the weight room this summer, we have to improve our physical strength and mindset. I see potential in the kids I have returning.”

Against IM, Brewster pinned the Mountaineers’ Marcus Verette to earn the six team points that Manistique needed to get the victory.

Manistique earned forfeit wins at five other weight classes.
