Gwinn Modeltowners, Munising Mustangs, Marquette Redmen, Superior Central Cougars boys basketball teams come away with victories

GWINN — Gwinn took advantage of a parade to the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to pull out a 50-44 victory over Manistique in a Mid-Peninsula Conference high school boys basketball game played Tuesday night.

The Modeltowners brought a 33-25 lead into the fourth quarter and held on after being outscored 19-17 in the period.

But all but two of those fourth-quarter points came at the free throw line as Gwinn went 15 of 18 there.

Six players each had at least two attempts in the period, including junior James Harnick who went 4 for 4 in scoring a game-high 17 points.

Fellow junior Tristan Jancsi added 10 points, also going 4 for 4 in the fourth, while pulling down a team-high eight rebounds.

And senior Caleb Anderson added eight points.

“It was a close game for the most part throughout,” Gwinn head coach Jim Finkbeiner said. “We didn’t shoot particularly well, but were real aggressive going to the basket, which turned into opportunities to shoot free throws. We didn’t make many early, but made them in the fourth quarter when we needed it.

“James led us in scoring, but I thought everybody contributed tonight for four quarters. Just what we needed, pull a close game out and get the win.”

For Manistique, Schyler Andersen led the way with 15 points, nine coming in the fourth. Teammate Sammy Warren had 10.

But the Emeralds were just 3 of 5 at the free-throw line in the final quarter.

Gwinn jumped out to a 13-6 lead after one quarter, extending it to 26-14 by halftime.

Munising 66, Bark River-Harris 42

At Munising, five players scored in double figures for the Mustangs, led by senior Austin Killips with 15 points that included three 3-pointers.

Munising (13-1) jumped out to a 19-8 lead after one quarter, extending it to 33-19 at halftime and 52-27 by the end of the third quarter.

Senior Jesse Duran added 13 points, including 3 of 3 free throws, to the winning effort, while senior teammate Josh Huotari and junior Sam Brown had 12 points apiece. And freshman Kane Nebel got in on the act with 10 points.

Huotari was 6 of 8 at the free-throw line while Nebel sank a pair of triples.

Riley Bray paced the Broncos with 11 points as Nick Javurek had nine.

Marquette 61, Westwood 47

At Ishpeming, Westwood head coach Scott Syrjala credited Marqeutte with ball pressure that made the difference.

“Marquette applied a little bit of ball pressure that got to us,” Syrjala said.

Junior Kameron Karp led the Redmen (11-3) with 20 points, while fellow junior Ty Lotterman added 17 and yet another junior, Lincoln Sager, had 13.

Patriots sophomore Zach Carlson led all scorers with 23 points as fellow sophomore Zach Beckman added nine.

“We have give Zach Carlson some better support,” Syrjala said. “Our defense is getting better, it’s just that we have to get our offense going.”

He explained that Westwood had a pair of two-minute defensive stretches that really cost his team, one coming just out of halftime and another early in the fourth quarter.

“That was where our defense really failed us,” the coach said, adding that the Pats had cut Marquette’s lead to three points before the second letdown.

Jeffers 59, Republic-Michigamme 18

At Painesdale, the Hawks held Jeffers to less than 10 points in both the first and fourth quarters, but it was the middle quarters that got away from them.

The Jets turned a 9-4 lead after one quarter into a 33-7 advantage at halftime and 55-11 bulge entering the final period.

Kolin Conklin led R-M scorers with six points, including 2 of 2 on free throws, while Logan Hanninen and Eli Luokkala added five points apiece.

Christian Hocking paced Jeffers with 17 points as John Schutz added 14 and Kyle Mattila 10.

Superior Central 64, Mid Peninsula 63 (OT)

At Eben, SC hung on for dear life after leading 41-29 at the end of the third quarter and being tied 52-52 at the end of regulation.

Parker Maki led the Cougars (3-10 overall, 1-9 SCC) with 20 points. Will Carlson added 15. Zach Englund paced Mid Pen with 27 as Dylan Trudell scored 15 and Michael Englund had 12.

“We made good runs in the second and third quarter, then we went away from our game plan in the fourth,” SC coach Harry Robbins said. “We wanted to get Will Carlson into the game as much as we could, and with each game he’s getting a lot more confidence.

“This is a good confidence boost for us,” Robbins said. “At times the guys were getting a little frustrated. Their big guys hit the boards well, but tonight we cut our turnovers down.”

Mid Pen (5-7 overall, 3-7 league) sank 27 of 33 free throws and the Cougars were 17 of 23 there.

The Cougars, whose JV won for the first time this season, travel to Engadine Friday.
