Gaetano Cammarata, Evan Kroll each score twice in Marquette Redmen’s 7-1 win at Kingsford to open MHSAA tournament

IRON MOUNTAIN — Behind two power-play goals from senior Gaetano Cammarata and two even-strength goals from junior Evan Kroll, Marquette rolled past Kingsford 7-1 Thursday night in an MHSAA Division 2 regional tournament semifinal at Mountain View Ice Arena.

Owen Riipi added a goal and three assists for Marquette, which improved to 23-4. Cooper Anderson recorded two assists for the Redmen as did Lucas Guertin.

In all three periods, one thing was consistent, the Redmen forecheck kept the puck away from Kingsford for much of the game.

“We moved the puck really well tonight, this is such a tough building to play in and it was close early on,” Marquette head coach Doug Garrow said. “I kept telling our guys that we needed to get our first goal, and then once we got our second goal, things progressed and got rolling for us.”

Marquette outshot the Flivvers 41-23, which kept Kingsford senior goalie Evan Hedtke on his toes.

“I thought our guys really worked hard tonight,” Kingsford head coach Greg Wadge said. “As the game wore on, our defense did a good job of tightening up in the neutral zone, stopping Marquette from making stretch passes that they are so good at.”

Garrow noted something that many other Great Lakes Hockey Conference coaches noted throughout the years, that it is difficult for opposing teams to play at Mountain View.

“Things happen quicker in this place, and opposing players have to get used to making decisions quicker. The rink is shorter and not as wide as most regulation rinks are,” Garrow said. “It helped we were on the power play so much tonight, it gave our guys time to make plays and move the puck.”

The Flivvers were sent to the penalty box nine times to only three for the Redmen.

“We had way too many penalties tonight, especially against a team that moves the puck as well as Marquette does,” Wadge said.

Marquette capitalized on their power play opportunities, scoring goals during four of nine Flivver penalties. Kingsford did score a power play goal of their own, a tally from Hunter Fortner for their only goal.

“I thought Brendan (Hakkola) made a couple key saves in the second period, really big saves that kept us in the game,” Garrow said. “It was a good game for everyone, everyone got ice time and everyone contributed in one way or another.”

The Redmen face Escanaba in the Division 2 regional final on Wednesday at the Wells Sports Complex.

Kingsford ends its season at 12-13.
