MARQUETTE — The Westwood boys and Marquette girls reappearances were the biggest changes among area teams in this week’s Upper Peninsula high school basketball polls conducted by select members of the U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Neither team was in the top five last week of their respective Division 1-3 rankings, though the Redettes did receive several votes the previous week.

The Patriots boys (6-2) re-entered in their poll in fifth place as only five teams received any consideration.

The Marquette girls (8-2) went from what was in effect seventh, leapfrogging fifth-place Negaunee (8-2) and taking over fourth place in D 1-3.

In those same polls, the Negaunee boys (8-0) remained in second and Marquette boys (6-2) third, while the Westwood girls (8-1) stayed put in second and Negaunee girls fifth.

The only area team receiving mention in a Division 4 poll is the Baraga girls (9-1), who bumped up a spot to third.

One area team received consideration for the first time in an Associated Press poll, which like the UPSSA polls, are released every Tuesday during the regular season.

The Negaunee boys earned 22 votes in Division 3 for 12th place, five votes out of the top 10.
