Northern Michigan University hold intrasquad swimming, diving meet

MARQUETTE — Several records were set and eight seniors were honored as the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams held their annual intrasquad meet and skins competition at the PEIF pool on Saturday.

Senior women’s swimmer Rachel Helm set a pool record in the women’s 50-yard butterfly in 25.14 seconds, while freshman men’s swimmer Roberto Camera set team and pool records in the 50 breaststroke in 25.77.

In addition, pool records were set in the 800 freestyle relay as the event hadn’t been held in the pool in a decade. The men’s team clocked 7:38.72 with freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo, sophomore Jon Busse and seniors Lajos Budai and Jonas Reinhold, while the women came in at 7:42.31 with Helm and freshmen Michaela Nelson, Meritxell Font Cantarero and Pilar Perello Ferrer.

The Wildcat skins tradition also continued with Helm winning the women’s competition as Nelson, Font Cantarero, Perello Ferrer, freshman Jenna Joerger, sophomore Brianna Arnold and juniors Gabriella Spajic and Katharina Springhetti also competed.

Budai won the men’s skin against Busse, Camera, Reinhold, senior Maksim Kapustin, junior Drew Del Papa, sophomore Felipe Lamos and freshman Erikas Kapocius.

Seniors honored were Budai, Kapustin, Reinhold, Helm, Michael Biclawski, Jamie Kimble, Nicola Pasquire and Madelyn Irelan.

The Wildcats are off for a month until the GLIAC Championships that run from Feb. 19-22 at Saginaw Valley State University.
