MSHS swimmers beat Houghton

MARQUETTE — Sophomore Delany Marchiol and senior Mollie Kilpela each had a hand in four wins as the Marquette girls swept to victory in all 12 events at a high school swimming and diving meet against Houghton on Thursday at the MSHS pool.

The Redettes won 144-39 while the Redmen took the boys meet 120-62, winning eight events.

Marchiol won the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 9.46 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.14, while Kilpela captured the 50 freestyle in 25.87 seconds and 100 free in 58.25. Both also swam on Marquette’s winning 200 medley and 200 free relays.

Two more MSHS girls had a hand in three victories – sophomore Ella Whalen won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.14, while senior Paige Whaley took the 200 individual medley in 2:29.67. Both also swam on the winning 400 free relay, with Whalen on the 200 medley relay winners and Whaley on the victorious 200 free relay.

Three Redmen boys were triple winners.

Freshman Quinn Kerekes won the 200 IM in 2:25.65 and 100 back in 1:04.48, freshman Liam McFarren the 100 free in 55.08 and 200 free in 2:00.67 and sophomore Alex Gooch took the 100 fly in 1:07.32.

All three swam on the winning 200 medley relay, with Gooch also on the victorious 200 free relay.

The Marquette teams’ final home meet will be against Ishpeming-Negaunee on Thursday, with the Upper Peninsula Finals set for the MSHS pool on Feb. 14-15.
