Marquette swims to pair of wins

MARQUETTE — The Marquette Senior High School swimming and diving teams combined to win all but one event in a home sweep of Rudyard on Friday.

The Redettes won the girls meet 135-20 and the Redmen 140-23.

“Rudyard had very small numbers and were left at a big disadvantage, but Rudyard is what helps make high school swimming in the (Upper Peninsula) happen,” MSHS head coach Nathan McFarren said. “We are always thankful that they make the trip to compete.”

The Bulldogs’ win came in the boys’ 200-yard individual medley with Lane Cozort clocking 2:55.18 to beat out Marquette runner-up Mason Doan by about 17 seconds.

Each Marquette team had 10 finishes of at least 1-2, including in each relay, and each team had three four-time winners between relays and individual events.

Those quadruple winners for the boys were Quinn Kerekes, who took the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke; Liam McFarren, who won the 100 backstroke; and Wyatt Clement, who nabbed the 50 freestyle.

Four-time girls winners were Delaney Marchiol, who won the 100 free and 200 free; Mollie Kilpela, who took the 50 free and 100 back; and Lexi LaCombe, who grabbed the 100 breast and 500 free.

Next up for the Marquette teams is a home meet against Westwood at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday along with the teams’ annual Splash & Dash also at the MSHS pool starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Starting at $3.23/week.
