Marquette Redmen pick up hockey win

TRAVERSE CITY — A quick mid-game outburst was enough to propel the Marquette Senior High School hockey team to a 4-1 victory at Macomb Dakota on Saturday.

The Redmen broke a scoreless tie with three goals in 126 seconds in the middle of the second period, while a fourth goal in the final five minutes added a bit of insurance.

Ansel Frost opened the second-period outburst with a goal 7:42 into the middle period, while Evan Kroll added another on a power play 1:04 later and Gaetano Cammarata got the third of the streak another 1:02 after that, coming with 7:12 remaining in the period.

After Dakota’s Shane Romback scored near the midpoint of the third period to cut the Redmen’s lead to 3-1, MSHS’ Jakob Peterson answered that with a shorthanded, open-net goal with 4:46 remaining.

“I thought we responded well after a tough overtime loss on Friday night,” Marquette coach Doug Garrow said. “I thought five-on-five we controlled the game and Macomb got the majority of their shots on their power play.

“Brennan Hakkola had his best game of the year and made some key saves when we were killing penalties.”

Hakkola finished with 25 saves, including 13 in the third period.
