Manistique girls basketball edges Ishpeming, 40-39, on Friday

MANISTIQUE — The Manistique girls won for the second time in a row, hanging on for a 40-39 basketball triumph over Ishpeming on Friday.

The Hematites had a chance to win it in the final five seconds but turned the ball over, enabling the Emeralds to run out the clock.

“It was tight all the way to the end,” Emeralds coach Dave Winkel said. “It was a real exciting game. The girls were very aggressive and never gave up. This is absolutely a boost for us. We were waiting for a game like this seemingly forever.”

The Emeralds led 16-7 after one quarter and 21-16 at halftime of this Mid-Peninsula Conference matchup.

Emilee McDaniel scored 14 points for the Emeralds (4-9, 1-5 M-PC). Emma Poirier had 10 for Ishpeming.

Ishpeming, which won the JV game 47-21, hosts Negaunee today.
