Katelyn Smith, Jordan Butler runners-up for Northern Michigan Unviersity track at downstate Jet’s Invite

UNIVERSITY CENTER — Senior Katelyn Smith and freshman Jordan Butler each had runner-up finishes for Northern Michigan University’s best places at the Jet’s Pizza Invitational held at Saginaw Valley State on Friday and Saturday.

Smith clocked 10 minutes, 13.55 seconds, just seven seconds out of the top finisher who ran for the host Cardinals. Freshman teammate Madison Malon was ninth in 10:32.37.

Butler was second in the triple jump in 10.95 meters while also going eighth in the long jump in 5.08 meters.

Northern’s 4-by-400 relay of seniors Sydney McPeters, Megan Martin and Paige Du Bois and sophomore Hannah Jones was third in 4:01.94.

NMU had eight top-five finishes among 15 total in the top 10.

Among those top finishers was junior Nina Augsten, who was sixth in the 60 hurdles preliminaries in 9.26 seconds and finished fourth in the finals in 9.22. She was also fourth in the pentathlon with 3,091 points as sophomore teammate Maddie Campbell was 10th with 2,744.

McPeters was sixth in the 400 dash in 59.99, while Marquette Senior High School graduate and NMU junior Izabelle Peterson was fifth in the 60 dash in 7.87 after she was second in the preliminaries in the 200.

Du Bois was sixth in the 800 in 2:18.57, while sophomore Anna Kelley was eighth in the mile in 5:18.07, junior Dunja Drobac sixth in the long jump in 10.41 meters and Brittany Ingalls 10th in the long jump with 9.50 meters.

And two Northern distance medley relays finished fourth and fifth. The fourth-place team that clocked 12:23.83 consisted of Kelley, Du Bois, freshman Caroline Vegeberg and junior Elise Longley, while the fifth-place unit that came in at 12:42.42 included Malon, sophomore Aubrey Friedrich, freshman Morgan Lyon and sophomore Hannah Jones.

The Wildcats are off this weekend before heading to Stevens Point, Wisconsin for the Pointer Invitational at Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Feb. 8.
