Gwinn, Ishpeming wrestlers win at Escanaba Elks
ESCANABA — Two area wrestlers won championships at the Escanaba Elks Invitational held Jan. 4.
Gwinn freshman Xander Luoma pinned Ishpeming senior Christian Carello at 1:43 to capture the 130-pound title, while another Hematites senior, Alaric Martin, won the title at 189 with a pin at 1:25 of Newberry’s Lance Bowler.
Three other area wrestlers joined Carello as runners-up.
Westwood’s Rocco Carlson made it to the final at 160 before losing 15-0 to Gladstone’s Cole Hansen, Munising senior Gabe Cole reached the 171 finale before a 9-1 loss to Escanaba’s Kahler Geyer, and Negaunee’s Leo Helppi advanced to the 215 championship before he was pinned by Cody Hanson of Benzie Central at 3:38.
With the host Eskymos winning the team title with 224 points, Ishpeming was fourth with 130 1/2, Westwood eighth with 91, Newberry 10th with 86, Negaunee 12th with 79, Munising 13th with 59, Gwinn 14th with 49 and Manistique tied for 19th with 17.
