Northern Michigan University women 2nd, men 3rd at Calvin College Invitational swimming

GRAND RAPIDS — The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team is in second place and the men in third after the first day of the Calvin College Invitational.

The NMU men’s 800-yard freestyle relay “A” team won in 6:38.85 with senior Lajos Budai, senior Jonas Reinhold, sophomore Jon Busse and freshman Ivan Amillo Escobedo. The Wildcats’ men’s “B” team was fifth, while for the women, NMU “A” was second and “B” fourth.

Junior Ondrej Zach, already a two-time GLIAC Athlete of the Week this season, set two Northern records and made two NCAA qualifying times in just one event. He finished second in the 1,650 free in 15:26.97, while his first 1,000 of that event came in at 9:16.45. The 1,000 record was broken by 1.39 seconds and the 1,650 record by 16.55 seconds.

NMU had three top-five finishes in the women’s 1,650, with freshman Maria Arakelian third, senior Nicola Pasquire fourth and freshman Francesca Gastrow fifth.
